Beautiful Wreck by Kasey Lane is about Bowen Landry and Gabby Alvarez.
It seems as if only circumstances can bring these two together, since
Gabby is completely guarded and Bowen is a recovering addict not wanting
distractions. They are truly an unlikely pair. Only their friends
connect them, and nothing else. Is that true? On the other hand, when
Gabby’s place is vandalized and her safety is in jeopardy, Bowen comes
to the rescue. Deep down he doesn’t want to, since all Gabby does is
fight him off, wanting to keep her independence. What he doesn’t know is
that it’s her way protecting herself since she’s dealt with so much
disappointment and literal pain in her own life. It’s best to keep Bowen
at bay, but then they decide on a “friends with benefits” arrangement.
There’s nothing too complicated about that, right? Gabby and Bowen will
soon find out as their attraction intensifies.
Kasey Lane’s Beautiful Wreck definitely took me by surprise. It took me a while, but I was eventually pulled into both Gabby and Bowen’s worlds, sympathizing with them both. Lane depicts the struggles of her characters beautifully by allowing us to feel the daily fears they face. I would definitely say due to adult content and language that it’s meant for mature audiences. While I did expect to see a little more in both characters’ backstories, enough is given to get the gist of both Bowen's and Gabby’s reservations towards each other. I like how Lane shows that no matter one’s past, troubled or not, every person deserves genuine love. Watching how Gabby and Bowen gradually break down each other’s walls is engaging. I wondered the whole time ... will they or won’t they?
